His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Afloat and Ashore is a nautical fiction novel by Cooper. Set in 1796-1804, it follows the maritime adventures of Miles Wallingford Jr., the son of wealthy New York landowners who chooses to go to sea after the death of his parents. The book is okay, but I found the pacing a bit slow at times. Some parts felt dragged out, and I had a hard time staying engaged. However, the historical details and the descriptions of life at sea were interesting.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book. They're complex and interesting, and I liked how they developed throughout the story. The plot is exciting, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested. The writing style is a bit old-fashioned, but I think that adds to the charm of the book.
